Yesterday & Today: 30th May

There is something quite magical about penning the first few words of a fresh story; I think it’s about embarking on a new journey – and not being sure where that journey will take you, nor how long it will absorb you for. Indeed, you are not even confident you will make it all the way!

But I did just that yesterday with the first few dozen words of ‘Z’.

It was a deliberately short and low key start; a neutral beginning if you will, just to nudge the door open. Only when I add more to the narrative will it start to take shape in terms of style. And the first few thousand words will tell also me whether or not I have characters worth investing in.

More than that, yesterday also saw two full run-throughs of Crash, more Alma Road editing, and a competition entry. Plus – unplanned this one – I recorded a new short story for my podcast (details here). So a pretty varied day.

As today should be. After a Crash run-through I’ll be off to the library for my Tuesday morning session there, then ‘Write-on Ripon’ after lunch. I’ve dug out some very old material to meet the theme ‘Recollection’ (though my offering will be more on the autobiographical side). It will be during the library session that I’ll get a little more done on ‘Z’ or Alma Road or both…
