“A Horse at Night – On Writing”

While I know lots of people will love Amina Cain’s A Horse at Night, I’m afraid it wasn’t for me. I found it somewhat self-indulgent and confusing; perhaps it was a little too ‘meditative’ for my taste. And I couldn’t help but find in it an air of boastfulness in terms of citing all the books Cain had read and was referencing. In a way I felt belittled rather than engaged – which I know probably says more about me than the author or those who love the book!

In any event, it wasn’t what I was expected based on the blurb I’d read on-line. “My bad” as the rather dreadful modern expression goes – and one which should be expunged from our vocabulary instantly!
