Given how the first day of June went writing-wise, yesterday was unlikely to be any worse – and thankfully it wasn’t. I think taking the time out to post that ‘interim’ update helped exorcise the bleakness of the previous day, and helped my put some shape to my thoughts.
So, if you have been with me over the last couple of days, “thank you”.
As I mentioned in that mini update, I think I’ve found a way to ‘park’ ‘Z’ for a while, and scribbling a little more of an unfinished short story was a useful reaffirmation exercise if nothing else. We will see.
Other than that, what was there? On the face of it nothing much to be honest: some New Contexts: 5 admin, a little social media – that sort of thing. A few weeks ago, however, I drafted some potential covers for 17 Alma Road. I knew at the time that it was ridiculously early to be doing this, but I do like designing covers… Anyway, I returned to them yesterday, just to remind myself of them, and I was struck how positive an experience that was. So much so that I started thinking about when I would be able to send the novel out to agents and advance copy readers.
The conclusion was, why not sooner rather than later? After all, it’s a work I believe in, and given the hiccup with ‘Z’, it might prove just the tonic to finish working on that and send it exploring sooner rather than later.
So today may well see me start working on edit three of 17 Alma Road with a view to sending it out before the end of June (a timetable that also works well in relation to our house move). There should also be a run-through of Crash. I may have a rehearsal with Andy today or tomorrow, just waiting to hear when that will be; but one way or another I’ll read it out over the weekend (very few tickets left for next Saturday!)
