Yesterday & Today: 9th June

In writing about yesterday I could almost copy the previous day’s post. Almost. But then a lot of days are like that aren’t they when you are working on a limited number of projects?

Kicked-off with Crash, the final read before tomorrow’s performance. Way back in February I knew it would come round soon enough, and here it is. One more sleep!

The Society of Authors’ session with Val McDermid (interviewed by Joanne Harris) was interesting from the perspective of discussion of writing process. Not being a crime writer there was little else of moment for me really. McDermid has sold over 18 million books – which means I have about 18 million to go (so if you feel like helping out there..!)

One interesting aspect was the dynamic between interviewer and interviewee. Most writers love talking about themselves and their work, and at times you could see Harris struggling with her role. Three or four times she simply had to inject herself into the dialogue with her own process and experience. Not a criticism, just an observation.

Then, punctuated throughout the day, 17 Alma Road editing, and a chunk of drafting the short story I’ve been playing with.

Off into town this morning to start today‘s work in one of my ‘offices’; most likely the Claro Lounge. I’ll be focussing on Alma Road, and perhaps the short story too.

By the way, when I said the binge-watch of Shakespeare was over, I was lying. Now half-way through Brannagh’s Henry V – and it is nowhere near as good as the Hiddleston one I saw the other day: it’s leaden and lumpy, lacks pace, and is full of ‘National Treasures’ acting themselves… I’ve also turned up an all-star-cast Hollywood version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream – so I’m not expecting much there either…
