Yesterday & Today: 21st June

I was half expecting something of a storm yesterday when I confessed my preference for The Hobbit over The Lord of the Rings (film versions). But nothing.

This was in relation to some recent binge-watching. So here’s another go. Last month I watched the three Godfather films to back-to-back; I far prefer number 2, and don’t think Brando’s as great as people say in number 1…

As far as writing is concerned – and that’s really why we’re here!- further work on ‘Z’ yesterday; current progress suggests that the whole thing will settle on around 95k words – if I carry on to the end and maintain present progress in doing so. I’m taking nothing for granted.

So today I’ll carry on plugging away. It’s very unusual for me to only have one project on the go, but given we could be moving house in 36 days, maybe that’s not a bad thing. We have 70 packing boxes arriving on Friday, so the rubber hits the road then.

Actually yesterday was a big day for another reason in that my daughter finished her A-levels. It was the end of her school era, and the end of those kind of exams. In September she’s off to university and a new phase. Not only is life like that – the end of one thing, the beginning of something fresh – it should be like that, don’t you think? Always moving forward, doing new things. Isn’t that what keeps us alert and alive?

In writing terms it’s the next book, the next project. I can’t imagine not writing any more. Maybe I’ll ask them, when I die, to put a notebook and pencil in the coffin with me, just in case…
