Yesterday & Today: 6th July

I must have been feeling a little more generous during one of my NC:5 submission reviewing sessions yesterday as a higher proportion made it straight to the shortlist. Either that or it was the happy accident of a few good poems that happened to be alphabetically sequential…

The overall ratios – 25%, 35%, 40% for shortlist, longlist, reject – are where I would expect them to be at this stage.

I also managed a little ‘Z’ drafting too, introducing myself to a second character I really don’t like very much – and so it’s certain that my readers won’t too! But if we only wrote stories about people we liked or could empathise with, how boring would those books be?!

More of the same today.

According to my plan for ‘Z’ I know exactly what episodes I should be writing today – but having completed work yesterday, it felt as if the next two short parts come too early in the narrative. One of the advantages of the method I’ve used for this project is that it is unbelievably easy for me to take a look at the rest of the story and move those two episodes to somewhere later. In fact that’s the first job for today.

After a less than positive day on the moving house front yesterday, it’s now noticeable how much that prospect – and the practicalities of it – are eating into my conscious thought. I just want it over and done with but know there are a few more weeks left – and more weeks than we would wish…
