Thanks to two meetings, yesterday was one of my busiest for a while. Both sessions proved true to form. ‘Write-on Ripon’ offered a variety of style and talent against a largely common theme – as well as a somewhat heated debate about the nature of Artificial Intelligence and ‘consciousness’ (prompted by someone reading a ‘poem’ they had requested an AI program write for them).
It’s interesting how AI is proving a subject about which people can quickly arrive at entrenched and sometimes illogical views. This is the second time we’ve debated the topic at one of these meetings: stimulating debate, but same arguments, same outcome. I’ve also had an exchange with someone over it on Twitter not so long ago, but that was more about what does or does not qualify as AI.
The second meeting was this month’s Derby Stanza group. As almost always, we were treated to some really good quality thoughtful work from the group. Members consistently display real craft; there is a studied thoughtfulness about their work. Were last night’s pieces submitted to the NC:5 anthology I think most of them would get in to problem at all.
In addition to the groups, I managed a little work on ‘Z’ and finally made it through the ‘S’ poetry submissions for New Contexts: 5.
Out again this morning, so today‘s writing time will be limited. There are still 61 NC:5 submissions to read through [a large number are entitled ‘The…’] and around 75k of ‘Z’ to write – so it’s not as if I’ve nothing to do!
I might continue to tinker with my post-move plans – and in relation to the latter, will never be far away from my phone as we wait for news on a potential moving date…
