Yesterday & Today: 25th July

It’s difficult to concentrate when you’re sitting around waiting for the call from your solicitor which tells you that you have – finally – exchanged contracts on the house you’ve been trying to buy for three months.

But that just about sums up yesterday. In the pauses between fretting I was able to finish contacting all New Contexts: 5 contributors, but given the preoccupation with the house move doing so felt more like a way of passing the time than something essential and positive.

But it was essential activity and it is, of course, positive. Within a day or two I should be able to undertake a final end-to-end read through of the text, checking layout etc. along the way. Then I’ll almost be ready to go. Publication end of first or second week in August – just before our move.

Hopefully.

Knowing where the hold-up is (one incompetent estate agent and one remiss solicitor) I confess to an urge to ‘name and shame’ once the house is secured – but I’m not sure whether that has any moral merit, or is just sour grapes on being put through the wringer.

We’re going out for a walk today, partly as an antidote to yesterday’s relative inactivity, and partly to kid ourselves that life can go on as normal, house or no house. Of course, we’ll be hugging our phones as we walk, hoping for the metaphorical white smoke.

There will be bits of NC:5: adding in author biographies; making one or two requested last-minute edits etc. And maybe, just maybe, later we’ll be drinking that fizz we’ve had chilling in our fridge for what seems like an age…
