Faber: sharp practice or incompetence?

As a Faber Member I received an unsolicited email offering me 25% off a range of Short Story titles. I decided to take them up on their offer.

At the checkout however, the discount code in the email failed to work. I decided to buy the books and sort the discount out afterwards.

When I contacted the Faber ‘helpdesk’ via email I was told that I was only eligible for the 10% discount you get when you become a Faber member. I then sent them a copy of the email they sent me.

It was immediately clear that the person taking the emails had no idea about the promotion. “I’ll get back to you…”

A while later they came back to me and said that they had refunded me 20% of the cost of the books. I thanked them for their prompt attention, but then pointed out 20% wasn’t 25%.

I heard nothing else.

Now we’re not talking big money here, but it’s the principle of the thing.

Very poor, don’t you agree? And from such a iconic name in the publishing world…
