I don’t usually read poetry anthologies, however “Staying Alive – real poems for unreal times” had such great comments – and was so big! – that I thought I’d give it a go. (Though on reflection, how well known are Mia Farrow and Meryl Streep for their poetry criticism..?)
It remains unfinished. I’ve struggled through about 300 pages, and skim read the majority of those.
In an attempt to be so broad, so ‘big’ (>450 pages), so all-encompassing, sadly the collection has managed to include a large proportion of pieces that really are just not up to scratch; the wheat is lost in the chaff.
I rarely say this, but just don’t buy it. Be a bit more selective and spend your money on something you know you’ll enjoy.
