Abandoned – a sonnet

I am writing a long sequence of sonnets that will see publication in 2023. I thought it might be fun to share some of them in advance.

A sonnet is included below, along with an audio recording of me reading it.

Abandoned

Beyond this warped picket frame
stands the derelict house where you no longer dwell;
unruly thistles jostle in the same
romantic spot where once we’d kiss and tell.
How can it be that you moved on
and chose not to take me there?
That the cradle of our love is gone
its varnish cracking crumbling everywhere?

Yet did I hear you whisper as I left?
Catch your shadow in the fractured glass?

For an instant I was less bereft
buoyed by remembering what once was,
recalling how we used to meet
and taste the taste of us so sweet.
