Yesterday & Today: 1st February

After my two writing groups yesterday I was once again left wrestling with the question of ‘what constitutes poetry?’ – a clearly subjective issue. And also – to a slightly lesser extent – what’s the point of poetry? When I run my 2-day poetry course in the Spring, these are the first two questions I intend to debate with attendees. I believe that, although we may have differing views on the matter, understanding our own response to the questions is pretty fundamental to our output.

At the monthly poetry reading group at Northallerton library, Simon French‘s work went down really well. “One to watch” said one member! The books are Joyriding Down Utopia Avenue and ‘The Deadwing Generation.

Today‘s highlights are all about mentoring. I have a face-to-face session in the Claro Lounge this morning, and then this afternoon I’m reading someone’s work in advance of a Zoom session tomorrow. I’m looking forward to both as I find mentoring both stimulating and rewarding.

Happy February!
